First Stage Academy student Zaire Adams snags role in Debbie Allen's "Twist!"

By Mithra Ballesteros, First Stage Children's Theater

First Stage Academy student Zaire Adams just completed a session of summer Academy in time to pack his bags for Peachtree Street.  This week, he and his family move to Atlanta where Zaire will be joining the cast of Debbie Allen's new musical, Twist!, opening in September at the Alliance TheatreTwist!, which takes place in New Orleans, is a Creole retelling of Charles Dickens classic, Oliver Twist.

Maybe you remember Zaire Adams.  He played one of the colorful munchkins in the recent First Stage production of THE WIZ.  Shortly after completing the run with First Stage, Zaire auditioned for director Debbie Allen, who as director and choreographer, held casting calls in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Atlanta.

The poised nine-year-old boy was nonplussed when asked about the challenge of auditioning in front of a heavyweight like two-time Tony nominee Debbie Allen: "It wasn't scary at all.  I just told myself that I'm the only person in the room, like I'm at home."

The young performer works hard with an acting coach to hone his craft.  Zaire's father, Vince Adams, also credits First Stage for preparing Zaire for the experience.  "The structure of First Stage is beautiful.  There is no comparison.  It is an amazing program.  We are big fans, and always will be," says Mr. Adams.

As the family prepares to move, Zaire can't help but gloat a little:  "I'm going to have a tutor.  But when it's time for school to start for everyone else, I'll still be on summer break.  It's going to be great!"

Set in New Orleans during the Roaring Twenties, Twist! tells the story of a young orphan of mixed race, who seeks his true identity.  Click here for ticket information.
